My First Podcast!
This week I got to experience a form of social media that I never thought I would explore. Matt Cook and I partnered up for this podcasting project and lovingly named it “Trash Talk.” We have a close friend in our program who has run the Instagram account for the Theatre Arts Department for the past three years. Her name is Katja Roberts and she is currently a senior musical theatre major with a social media minor. I have always been impressed with the quality of content Katja creates and the number of people she reaches. Because of this, we decided that Katja was the perfect person to interview for our podcast.
All three of us are currently in rehearsals for different productions so we met at 10 p.m. one night this week to film. Matt and I had previously made a list of about 15 questions that we thought would allow for thoughtful answers from Katja. Those questions were:
Briefly introduce yourself and what you do here at ONU.
What interested you in the position of social media manager for the theatre arts department?
What steps did you have to take to get hired in this position?
How much time would you say you spend on this job weekly?
How do you find a balance between your job and your art for productions that you are involved in creatively as well?
You post a lot of well-edited reels. What apps or software do you use to create them?
Can you expand on the quality of the videos you take for these reels and how you decide what to put together into a reel?
Is there a certain format or fonts that you have to use to align with ONU branding or do you have full creative control?
Do you have to get your posts approved by a higher up or do you have full posting permissions?
What is your favorite aspect of this job?
You’ve taken social media classes here at ONU, what is something you’ve carried over into your work from those classes?
How do you think social media has changed marketing in theatre?
Is there anything else that you would want to add to your role to further promote our program?
Do you see yourself continuing this line of work elsewhere once you graduate?
You’re a senior, what is one piece of advice you would give to the next you?
This made for an easy filming process for all of us. We used Matt’s computer to record and mine to display the questions. Overall, I think we had a pretty efficient system and worked well together.
Katja had great insight into her role as the social media manager for the Theatre Arts Department. She does a lot of work behind the scenes that I hadn't even known was happening. Her work ethic and dedication are impressive and show in the quality of the work she produces. I am interested in one day having a job like hers and I believe I learned a lot from this interview about the requirements and mindsets needed to succeed. We ended up cutting a few of our questions for time but I still think the ones we kept are great. I am glad to have gained so much insight into Katja's work and I feel I have a new respect for her.
I had a lot of fun creating and executing this assignment. Matt and I have even discussed continuing “Trash Talk” as a podcast for our friends and us. I am happy this experience opened up a new opportunity for me to consider as I continue to build my social media presence.
