A Night Full of Theatre

One of the great things about being a theatre student at ONU is the number of opportunities our school gives us to experience and participate in the arts. One of the things we do consistently is the Cabarets. TAP is ONU’s theatre honors fraternity and they organize these events. Most of the people in my major are TAP members. Twice a semester they send out an email announcing the theme of the cabaret and asking participants to send in music. The first 10 people to respond get a spot in the performance. These cabarets are an awesome part of our program because everyone shows up to support.

This semester I got to perform in my first one. The theme was duets and trios. I decided to sing “The I Love You Song” from “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” with my friends Sam and Matt. Usually these cabarets are done at the Cask Room on Main Street but this time it was done in the Bear Cave. This allowed us to add more blocking and we were very excited about that. We spent about two weeks rehearsing whenever we could because all three of us had busy schedules.

I think our performance went really well. I usually get pretty nervous before performing but I was less nervous this time because I had my best friends with me. The song we sang is very dramatic so it was fun to get into the acting side of it too. We got a positive reaction from the entire audience. I am glad I decided to perform in my first cabaret and I will definitely be doing it again.

Luckily the night wasn't over yet. There was also an improv show! Fearless ShenANYgans is ONU’s improv troupe and they are amazing. Every show they have is so much fun because our whole program shows up to cheer them on. My roommate has been in it since last year and I love watching her perform. This show was special because it was also the first show for this year's new members. Matt and I sat together in the front row laughing all night. We are their biggest fans. By the time the show ended it was late and I was exhausted. It was a long night but there is nothing more fulfilling than participating in the arts with my friends.

  1. You were incredible in the Cabaret! It was so fun to watch everyone perform as well as perform too! I feel like half the time I never get to hear people outside of our class sing unless we are in a show, so it was so nice to watch everyone. Also, the Improv show was so fun! I was hysterical in the front row, it was so entertaining!
