Thanksgiving in Kansas!

Last week’s break was exactly what I needed. I had been feeling extremely anxious and overwhelmed leading up to it. There were so many things going on with my classes and the “ONU Holiday Spectacular” that I felt I couldn't catch a break. Thankfully a week off gave me some much-needed rest and recovery.

My grandpa passed away last month so we decided to visit my grandma in Kansas for Thanksgiving. Since they live so far away we don’t see this side of my family very often. My grandma seemed sad but I think having people in the house really helped her. She also has two cats to keep her company. Their names are Shadow and Skittlefritz. We spent two days relaxing with her before heading over to my aunt's house for Thanksgiving.

My grandma is in a phase where she is giving away all her jewelry so all of us cousins got a nice surprise when we arrived. It had been so long since I had seen them that I almost couldn't recognize a few of them. I’m not great at talking to new people so the interactions were occasionally painful for both parties. The food was great though and there were two dogs there that I could cuddle if the conversation got awkward.

Before I knew it Thanksgiving was over and it was time for us to fly home. The trip went very smoothly and I still got two nights of sleep in my own bed before going back to school. Sometimes I dislike traveling over short breaks because it adds more stress than necessary but this trip was very nice. I am so thankful to still have my family in Kansas even though we don’t see them a lot. Overall it was a successful Thanksgiving and a wonderful way to feel connected to and say goodbye to my grandpa. I hope I get to see that side of my family again soon.

  1. I also traveled over Thanksgiving break, and I agree that traveling over short breaks can be stressful at times, but I'm glad you had fun in Kansas! I'm sure your grandma loved having you there too!

  2. I'm so glad you got to visit your family over Thanksgiving break! I also understand family interactions being a bit awkward because my extended family all lives in Pennsylvania, and I live in Georgia so sometimes it's hard to interact when we don't see each other often. But I'm glad it went well and I love the names of those cats!

  4. I also felt that the break was exactly what I needed. Getting to spend time with friends and family is always a good time and definitely a good break from school. I'm glad that you were able to travel safely and get to spend some time with your grandma.

  5. I'm glad you got to see family over break! Even if it was not for particularly happy reasons it is always nice to see family that lives far away or that you do not get to see often. I also am with you about traveling in short breaks, I don't understand how people can make trips to New York on some random weekend and come back. I feel like whenever I travel it's always a big effort. Happy to be back!

  6. Hi Viv!
I’m so glad you had a much-needed break! Visiting your grandma sounds really special, especially after everything. It’s great that you got to spend time with family and that her cats were there for comfort. I miss and love you so much and can’t wait to hangout over break! Catching up with cousins can be awkward, but it’s nice you had some memorable moments. I’m happy the trip went smoothly and you got to relax at home afterward. I can’t wait to hear about everything in person and debrief the semester with you!

  7. We all needed the break but I’ve learned that sometimes even the breaks are hard work. What I think is interesting is how important the animals were to the time away. Having the cats and dogs around really does release tension by providing a topic for conversation, a warm cuddle, and unconditional love. Breaks of any kind should always include animals!
