The Brand of My Future

While I was completing this week’s Pinterest assignment one of the concepts I wrote about stood out to me. This concept was the idea of a strong personal brand. We studied this in Chapter 2 of our textbook but I think it is something I should elaborate on.

As a musical theatre major this concept is very important to my success in the professional world. In this industry everyone is essentially running their own small business. When I walk into an audition room I need to make sure I am marketing myself correctly for the role I want. The whole package I bring into the room has to be consistent. This includes the song I sing, what I wear and the headshot I present. All of these things add up to the brand I have chosen for this particular audition. This brand is so specific that it changes from one audition to another.

Much of what we are learning right now is how to identify where we fit. For example I currently fit well in a young and innocent role. That’s why I’m choosing most of my repertoire to fit that image. I’m also getting new headshots done soon so I have some that fit that brand. This brand may eventually change as I grow as a performer and as a person but right now it is very helpful that I have such a strong brand forming.

It can sometimes be stressful trying to make myself fit into such a specific box but unfortunately that’s how this industry is. Since I’m only a sophomore I haven’t yet taken the classes that really dive into this topic. Next year I will take an audition class that will help solidify my type even more. This concept of types and specific branding is slowly becoming less strict as the theatre world becomes more diverse. However right now it is still an important thing for me to learn. I am glad that this class and this Pinterest assignment have got me thinking more about how this concept applies to my future.
